General dentistry is a branch of medical science which deals with all kinds of treatments associated with the teeth and gums and other related organs of the body. In this branch, one can include procedures like dental implants, dentures, endodontic treatment, teeth whitening, placement of dental crowns and caps et al. Several other forms of treatments like screening for oral cancer and gingivitis too are included in this branch of dental sciences.
What is teeth whitening?
This is a type of treatment which will help in whitening of the teeth. This can be done at home as well as in the dental clinic. However, whichever form of teeth whitening one opt for, it is necessary to know that this procedure is not permanent. Teeth which are whitened at home or in the dental clinic can become re-stained if proper care is not taken of them. Thus, it is very- essential to maintaining your dental hygiene after teeth have been whitened so that the effect of the whitening stays for as long as is possible.
What are dental implants?
This is a procedure by which teeth are first extracted out, and then titanium screws are embedded in the jawbone. A dental crown or cap is placed atop the titanium screw and this functions as the tooth which the outside world sees. This procedure is permanent, and these dental implants do not need to be replaced during the entire lifetime of a person if they are cared for properly. Dental implants result in teeth which are as close to the original set of teeth of the concerned patient.
What are dentures?
This treatment involves removal of teeth. After this, a set of dental dentures is made in the dental laboratory, and these are worn over the gums of the patient. These need to be removed each night and placed in a container full of cleansing liquid into which a cleansing tablet has been added. The dentures are also brushed with this cleansing liquid each night. Dentures can last for up to five to seven years and become loose and ill-fitting with time. These need to be replaced after this duration. However, there is a bit of danger involved with dentures since they may slip out of the mouth of the patient if he or she laughs too loudly. Also, care must be taken not to eat anything which is. However, this too is not a permanent procedure, and care needs to be taken after this procedure is through. Also, teeth whitening gums are consumed, and these too help in the whitening process. Along with, certain whitening toothpaste can be made use of. However, this too is a procedure which does not last permanently.very hard or sticky since the dentures may snap due to this. Also, the smile and manner of eating and talking to a patient may get affected due to dentures.
What is root canal therapy?
This is also called endodontic treatment, and general dentistry includes this. In this treatment, the dental pulp of the tooth is first taken out. This comprises cellular matter, blood vessels, and nerves. After this, the dental cavity is cleaned up thoroughly well, and it is disinfected. It is then filled up with a substance called gutta percha. This cavity is then sealed off from the outside environs with cement. A dental cap or crown may be placed on top of the existing tooth structure to give it strength and support.
